Thoughts on Saturday
Was lovely to enjoy Badminton on a warm and sunny afternoon in England. The course looked to have been well watered. There was a large and mainly well behaved crowd enjoying the event although there was evidence of too much sun and too much drink for some.
My top picks of Gemma and Ollie came through and I was delighted that Nicky and Bing completed as well. On the final day Ros will be strong as well as Ireland’s Austin O’Connor, or could it be archetypal Brit Harry Meade who comes through and takes the title and ensures European selection at the same time.

Thoughts on my Video
Thanks to everyone for watching, liking and sharing this video and for your comments. I had all the details entered by Friday with a plan for Saturday to get off to the Vicarage Complex and come back to the Lake. Apart from the main Arena, there was only one fence I missed.
The video was edited Sunday morning and uploaded to coincide with the BBC coverage.
This represents about half the video I shot on the day and hopefully I’ll find time to edit the rest into a Videographer’s cut mega-version across the summer.
As you’ll see it was a beautiful spring afternoon, there was a large crowd and access around the course was the best I’ve known. There is an increasing tendency for people to set up camp and watch rather than walk the course and I was amazed how full the seating was in the main arena when I popped in at 10:15.
It is worth mentioning that officially you are not allowed to publish your own video from events like Badminton. Certainly accreditation would not have permitted me to publish this video.
About the AX100E Sony 4K Handycam
Of my two 4K cameras I choose the AX100 for big events like Badminton in order to be less conspicuous and because it is wonderfully light weight. Of course I’m missing out on 50fps and auto ND plus the 280’s image quality but the 280 just isn’t the camera to be lugging around in a big crowd.
For the technically minded I had the AX100 fixed at F4 and 1/50 shutter speed and gain running on auto with ND set manually to suit conditions and ensure gain was as low as possible. The bright conditions often required the ND3 setting. Out of personal choice I have an AE offset of -0.7 and most of the video here is rendered without colour compensation in Premiere Pro.
Those instances where I under compensated with ND are obvious but I’ve been able to rescue them in Premiere Pro. I think I might sharpen up the shutter speed in future, perhaps try 1/100. It’s a balance between getting the correct amount of motion blur at the same time as ensuring horse and rider are both in focus (especially when they’re coming towards the camera).
I used the ECM-XYST1M stereo microphone connected via the multi interface shoe. The eyecup is essential to use the viewfinder as the LCD screen can’t be seen in bright conditions.
I had stabilisation turned off, I think this was a mistake as some of the long shots are a bit shaky, hence I think Standard would have been a better setting.
This was the first time I’d used the camera at 100Mbps with a 128GB 300Mbps card, that all worked fine although I did notice the PC was working hard once the clips were all in place.
